The Legal Aid Clinic of Bharath Institute of Law, in association with the Tambaram Taluk Legal Services Committee, successfully organized a two-day Legal Awareness and Legal Aid Campaign at the Tiruvanchery Panchayat Office. The programme was held under the guidance of Legal Consultant Mr. Sivakumar and faculty coordinators Prof. Yuvan Shankar R. and Prof. Sophia Stella Sargunam.
Day 1 (29th August 2025): Outreach and Preparation
Student volunteers engaged in door-to-door outreach, distributing more than 500 pamphlets across residential and commercial areas in Tiruvanchery. This ensured active community participation and awareness about the availability of free legal consultation. The team also completed necessary arrangements for the next day’s sessions.
Day 2 (30th August 2025): Awareness & Legal Aid Sessions
The campaign was formally inaugurated by Mr. P. Ganesan, M.A., B.L., Retd. District Judge, in the presence of Prof. Dr. Murugadoss, Dean, School of Law, BIHER, advocates, faculty, and Panchayat leaders including Mrs. S. Janani Suresh Babu (President) and Mrs. S. Rukmani Sakthi (Vice-President). In his address, the Chief Guest emphasized that “access to justice is not a privilege, but a fundamental right”, urging young lawyers to strengthen grassroots justice.
The sessions included:
Awareness for Sanitary Workers Covering rights, welfare, and protections, supported by a street play on domestic violence.
School Awareness Programme Interactive sessions for 8th and 9th graders of Sri Chaitanya School on cybersecurity, anti-ragging, and the POCSO Act.
Free Legal Consultation Advocates Mr. Manavalan and Mr. Balachandran offered professional advice to over 30 community members on property disputes, family issues, and other legal concerns.
The initiative successfully blended education, outreach, and service, empowering diverse community groups and reaffirming the role of legal aid in promoting justice at the grassroots.
