Students and faculty members of Bharath Institute of Law had the privilege of attending the 5th Edition of The Annual Rakesh Endowment Lecture Series for Justice and Equity, held at Valluvar Kottam on 18 April 2026. The event brought together eminent jurists, academicians, and members of the legal fraternity for an enriching exchange of ideas on constitutional values, justice, and contemporary societal challenges.

The keynote address was delivered by Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. His lecture on “Environment – Rights or Duties under the Constitution of India” offered profound insights into the constitutional dimensions of environmental protection. Drawing from constitutional principles, judicial developments, and evolving environmental jurisprudence, he emphasized the delicate balance between individual rights and collective responsibilities in safeguarding the environment. His address inspired students and faculty alike to reflect on the constitutional mandate of environmental stewardship.

The lecture was followed by an engaging moderation session between N. Ram and Justice Oka. Their discussion traversed significant milestones in India’s environmental movement, from the historic Silent Valley protests to recent landmark judicial pronouncements aimed at environmental preservation. The dialogue provided a rich historical and legal perspective on the evolution of environmental consciousness in India.

An interactive session was subsequently conducted by Justice G. M. Akbar Ali, during which students had the valuable opportunity to engage directly with Justice Oka. The Chief Guest responded thoughtfully to their questions, offering practical insights and nuanced perspectives on contemporary environmental challenges and legal solutions.

The event proved to be an intellectually stimulating and transformative experience. Justice Oka repeatedly underscored the importance of cultivating a scientific temper, as envisaged under the Constitution, to effectively address pressing environmental issues. The lecture series served as a powerful reminder of the role of law, judiciary, and informed citizenry in advancing environmental justice and sustainable development.
