About the Seminar

White collar crimes thought was first evolved by Edwin H. Sutherland – the famous criminologist and sociologist in 1939.In India there were 148 arrests made in the year 2011 on account on these crimes. Year after year the percentage rise in the occurence of crimes is scarring the soceity and much needed political will is seeming mirage. White collar criminality has become a global phenomenon with the advance of commerce and technology. The recent developments in information technology, particularly during the closing years of the twentieth century, have added new dimensions to white collar criminality. There has been unprecedented growth of a new variety of computer dominated white collar crimes which are commonly called as cyber crimes. These crimes have become a matter of global concern and a challenge for the law enforcement agencies in the new millennium. Because of the specific nature of these crimes, they can be committed anonymously and far away from the victims without physical presence. Further, cyber-criminals have a major advantage: they can use computer technology to inflict damage without the risk of being apprehended or caught. It is high time that the gravity of the matter was considered. It is the responsibility of everyone involved to take steps to curb this criminality. It is an issue which should attract the immediate attention of international communities. If white collar crimes are not checked, it would act to the detriment of the economic progress of the country and ultimately its over-all development. This seminar is conducted with the view to understand the need for strong technical legislation to check and combat white collar crimes.
